Riverchase Elementary Celebrates World Read Aloud Day

teachers at Riverchase Elementary in CFVISD dress up for World Read Aloud Day

.Teachers at Riverchase Elementary dressed as crayons for World Read Aloud Day

Millions of people in more than 100 countries celebrated World Read Aloud Day on February 16. This day brings together children, teens, and adults to celebrate the power of the spoken word.

Readers are taking action to show the world that the right to literacy belongs to all of the people. When you read, you are standing up for everyone’s right to read. Reading does not discriminate a child’s race, culture, or economic standing.

Riverchase Makes World Read Aloud Day Special

Riverchase Elementary in CFBISD was one of many campuses across the district that participated in the event. Staff members from around the school dressed as their favorite literary character from their favorite book. All involved had fun.

Students at Riverchase Elementary also learned valuable lessons about the importance of reading. The day emphasized the impact reading has on future success. Despite the overwhelming evidence for the importance of reading, we are still seeing declines in reading in students across the country.

How Reading Impacts Children

The Kids and Family Reading Report shows there has been a significant drop in the frequency of reading to children over the age of five and eight. The World Read Aloud Day helps families realize the importance of reading aloud to their children and enjoying time together as a family.

“Data from the Kids & Family Reading Report reveals just how much parents and kids value time spent reading together. Besides being joyful, reading aloud to children at an early age—and even after children can read aloud on their own—can have a profound effect on children’s language and literacy development and support their ability to think critically and communicate effectively. We are pleased to help spread these important messages to families, children and educators around the world on World Read Aloud Day.” – Dick Robinson, Chairman, President and CEO of Scholastic

What We Do in CFBISD

In CFBISD, we encourage all of our students to read everyday. We know how important reading is to the future academic career of our students.

The Trojan wrestlers had a pretty good start to the regional tournament. During day one on Friday, all three boys that entered the tournament won at least one match. Both Tyrese Lewis and Chris Conway won two matches and returned for day 2. On the second day of competition, Lewis' tournament ended with a 6th place finish. He ended his season as a regional placer with a 25-9 overall record. Conway's path was an odyssey worthy of a Trojan hero. He won his first match of the date then was narrowly defeated in his second. That loss sent him to the 5th place match, which he won. That victory allowed him to challenge for the fourth place wrestler for a berth to the state wrestling finals. In his final battle of the weekend, Chris Conway avenged two previous losses against a competitor from Creekview and will be the Trojans' lone qualifier for state in his first competitive season.

Eighteen Lennox engineers from various engineering backgrounds came to Central Elementary on February 23rd to teach 4th graders about the joys of their jobs and to celebrate engineers week.

18 Lennox engineers from various engineering backgrounds came to Central Elementary on February 23rd to teach 4th graders about the joys of their jobs and to celebrate engineers week. The engineers who visited had a variety of backgrounds from electrical engineers to mechanical engineers.  Students were really excited to find out their were even engineers whose sole job was to break things and test items in extreme conditions to ensure the product was suited for a variety of environments.

After speaking about their jobs as engineers they led the students through a lesson on bridge design.  Students, alongside engineers, developed plans and built bridges they later tested for strength.  Both the Central students and engineers felt as if they had a great deal of learning during the day’s events.  The 4th graders left with a greater knowledge of the world of engineering as a possible career path, some new skills in bridge making, and a smile on their face.
