As another academic year closes, Texas Council on Economic Education (TCEE) is pleased to announce that DeWitt Perry Middle School has placed first and second in the Personal Financial Challenge, Middle School Division!

The students have demonstrated understanding and skills in personal financial literacy through online competitions in the Personal Finance Challenge.

The students on 1st place Team Tom Clarke – Neha Arora, Katie Donia, Megan Hawkins and Clotilde Tagnon.  The students on 2nd Place Team Asian Swag Academy – Jason Wu, Hemal Salvi, Brendan Glascock and Somdipto Das.

Personal Finance Challenge

In the Finance Challenge, Middle School Division, students compete online on their campuses in teams of four during the fall and spring semesters. The top two winning middle school teams across the state are notified and rewarded cash prizes. Michael Miller, teacher at DeWitt Perry Middle School had the first and second place teams in the state.  The first place team name, Tom Clarke, and teacher received a check for $75 and the second place team, Asian Swag Academy, and teacher received a $50 check.

TCEE appreciates State Farm’s partnership that allows students across Texas to participate in the Econ and PFL Finance Challenges.

Catherine Rinhart, program director for student competitions, stated, “TCEE applauds the success of the teachers and their students in these endeavors.  To place in state competitions requires additional time and effort to enhance the team’s understanding of what is often complex concepts.”

Laura Ewing, TCEE president stated that, “The two student team wins is one of many examples of the strategies that Carrolton Farmers Branch teachers and administrators use to bring relevance to their students.  The students demonstrated through their test scores a strong understanding of financial literacy. These lessons learned will provide skills for a lifetime.”

“Today is great day for Linner Wooten and I just want to thank Furneaux Elementary, all the staff and teachers that have helped Linner along this journey. Each teacher has influenced him in a special way. They have been so patient, helpful, and caring to him and me. They were always there to help him go the extra mile, there to answer any and all my questions. They always called me when he was good or bad, let me know what is best for him. For some reason, when I had him I never pictured the day he would graduate elementary. But these last 3 years have been rough for him but with his teachers, tutors and counselors he has made it. Thanks again for everything. I would recommend this school to any kid for elementary.” – Evangelina Hernandez

And thank you Ms. Smith in After the Bell for all you do for the program and being patient with me! “I think that going to such a diverse school (like Ranchview) has better prepared me for the life after high school. I feel like I can connect with a variety of different people now and can feel comfortable doing so. I was taught by some amazing teachers and coached by some amazing coaches and they have done their best to prepare me for the life I will experience when I graduate high school.” - Caroline Killian, Ranchview High School Class of 2014

kacies runKacie’s Run is a charitable 5K and 1 Mile Family Fun Run held every spring in Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD. Our mission is to create an opportunity for the C-FB ISD community, its students and staff, to experience our C-FB ISD All Stars Special Olympics Athletes through their involvement as volunteers, sponsors, and participants. Our event promotes acceptance, encouragement, and empowerment through service to others. We honor the legacy of service of Kacie Brekhus. An epic evolution of service to others, Kacie’s Run tells the story of a student who was empowered to lead, whose tragic death inspired others to give of themselves, and a legacy which continues today

Lenora Blackiston once wrote, “Out of such pure and simple beginnings grow great and wonderful things.” The Turner Torch Run began in 1999 with the charge of empowering students to embrace volunteerism and raise funds for the local Special Olympics Team. Fifteen years later that same charge of service to others is the beating heart of Kacie’s Run. As my fellow Student Coordinators stand before you, we join an ever growing family of students whose lives are enriched by the opportunity to give of ourselves, our time and talents to our All Stars.

What has grown out of one school to now include forty-three schools we stand and represent hundreds of students who dug deep in their pockets to find change for the coin drive, countless teachers who paid to wear jeans to school, and even more friends of our All Stars who participated on Race Day. We represent the campus liaisons who lead their schools in Kacie’s Run campaigns, the Kacie’s Kids volunteers who worked with us, the Kacie’s Run Committee whose dedication is unwavering and the family of Kacie Brekhus whose compassion, generosity, and love continues to endow the realization of our mission.

machayoSusan Machayo, principal of Farmers Branch Elementary School in the Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD has been awarded the University Council for Educational Administration Excellence in Educational Leadership Award following her nomination by the Department of Education Policy and Leadership in the Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education and Human Development at Southern Methodist University.

The award was presented on June 5, 2014 at the Carrollton-Farmers Branch Board of Trustee meeting. The Excellence in Educational Leadership Award is an annual recognition for practicing school administrators who have made significant contributions to the improvement of principal preparation.  It is an unusual award because it affords national recognition, but the recipients are selected by individual universities. Ms. Machayo has mentored five principal candidates in the SMU Accelerated School Leadership M.Ed. either directly as their field mentor during course work or as summer school assistant principals.

Her current assistant principal, Farah Rehman is a graduate of the program. Susan is an outstanding candidate for the award because her school is a diverse Title 1 school with high academic achievement.   She exemplifies UCEA values of Learning and Social Development for all Children; Diversity, Equity and Social Justice for all Educational Organizations; and Quality and Excellence in the Preparation of School Leaders and Professors.

“Newman Smith High School was instrumental to where I got today…”

“Dear Mr. Pouncy,

I remember the first time I walked into Newman Smith High School in the Fall of 2005. I had no idea what to expect and I had no idea what those four years of my life would consist of. The four years went by, when graduation came in June of 2009.

I am happy to say that it was indeed a great experience and I would like to than you and the faculty for what you have done. I already wrote a rather lengthy e-mail to Ms. Conejo when I started law school — for the rigorous material she taught me (and everyone else) since it enabled me to receive twelve (12) credit hours by simply taking an exam at UNT, when I did not take ANY Spanish classes since sophomore year with her.

I was in a rush to become a professional, but I still had lots of fun in college and law school, completing both programs in just over four years. Anyways, now I am attorney licensed to practice law in the State of Illinois. I am a partner at a law firm in Chicago that focuses on criminal and civil litigation. I’ve handled numerous trials and hearings involving Fortune 500 Companies, illegal police arrests, etc… and I’m still 22-years-old.

Newman Smith High School was instrumental to where I got today, and I think it’s important that I give credit to where I started.

Yours very truly, Stephen Le Brocq, Partner Attorney at Law”

At Barbara Bush Middle School, these IB students are caring and principled when it comes to giving to others. This group is called “Bronco Lead”, and they took it upon themselves to raise money for an Angel Tree. They collected donations ranging from pennies to $200 from their own family members, teachers and students, during lunch and morning tutorials. Together, they raised $600 to “adopt” eight needy students right here at Bush Middle School. Each student will receive books, clothing and a fun item that was on their wish list. The concern shown by these students is another great example of service in action here at this International Baccalaureate World School. Way to go Broncos!

The Student Council at Barbara Bush IB World School have been hard at work collecting food for the North Texas Food Bank. By making daily announcements and having a grade level challenge, the students collected 200 food items to deliver just in time for the holiday break. The fine arts department made extra challenges to their students to bring in food items. An online donation campaign was also set up so that parents and community members could go online and donate in the name of Barbara Bush Middle School. Thanks to all who participated in this drive, and thanks to the Student Council for completing some excellent service to their community!

Good Elementary Receives a Visit from Cassidy the Therapy Dog

Bernie Ponzio and her golden retriever therapy dog, Hopalong Cassidy, live in Grand Prairie and travel around to different locations to provide support and comfort to people of all ages. Cassidy was born without a heartbeat, but was able to be brought back to life with CPR from vets at Texas A&M. The breeder wanted to put Cassidy down because he was born without a front right paw. Without hesitation, Bernie adopted Cassidy and trained him to be a therapy dog. Good Elementary was lucky enough to get to meet Bernie & Cassidy. Cassidy has now learned to walk with a prosthetic leg. Bernie uses Cassidy as a platform to reach out to students with disabilities, special needs, or those that feel they don't quite fit in. Bernie says that Cassidy will go to schools and help students who have trouble reading and will sit and listen to them read. Cassidy is the sweetest dog and our students and staff could not get enough of him! Thank you for visiting Good Elementary, Bernie & Cassidy!

The Trojans closed out 2016 on a high note. All ten wrestlers that competed in the tournament won at least one match while 8 of 10 came home with medals. In the JV boys’ brackets, Jamel Scott took home a bronze and Darian Dozier received a gold for his first place performance. In the girls’ tournament, junior Barbie Sanchez went 2-1 on the day and took home a bronze medal. As for the varsity boys, the Trojan numbers may have been small, but they were mighty. All five of Smith’s varsity boys took home medals, and combined they scored 64.5 team points to finish 5th out of 12 teams. With only five out of fourteen weight classes represented, that is quite an accomplishment! The Trojan boys wrestled tough from start to finish. Freshman Anthony Machorro took home the bronze at 106. All three seniors, Tyrese Lewis (152), Chris Conway (182), and Jonathan Johnson (285), placed second in their brackets. The lone Smith champion was sophomore Kendall Iwuagwu who pinned his opponent in the 195 pound class. This final tournament of 2016 has started the wheels in motion for a great district season starting on January 5 at home versus Lovejoy and McKinney North. The wrestling program would like to wish everyone a happy holiday break, and we’ll see you next year!
