A group of 5th grade girls and boys at Davis Elementary began making Rainbow Loom bracelets during their recess time each day. They wanted to sell the bracelets and donate the money to a charity. After doing some research, they decided to donate the money that was made from the sale to Ranch Hand Rescue – a facility in Argyle that rescues farm animals. One of the horses that was rescued, named Midnight, has been featured on Animal Planet and is the first horse to have a prosthetic leg. As the animals are rehabilitated, they are used in therapy with abused children and with adults with PTSD. The students toured the facility and presented a check for $325.00 to our tour guide.
This was a spontaneous project that had far-reaching benefits for the students and the rescue facility. They were able to work on a project of their choosing with students who had a similar interest – but not necessarily the ones that they are close to. They established a goal and worked very hard to reach the goal and, in doing so, showed responsibility and leadership. They showed great empathy as they talked to the student body about why they were raising money.
