Newman Smith Junior, Joyce Hong has been selected to teach English to elementary students in the Taiwan Summer Aid Program in Taiwan, Republic of China, July 6-August 6, 2014.
The program, sponsored by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Commission (Taiwan), Ministry of Education and Hakka Affairs Council, annually select exemplary students of Chinese descent worldwide to teach English/Language Arts to students in elementary school throughout Taiwan.
Joyce Hong, a distinguished scholar at Newman Smith, was selected after an extremely competitive process. She competed against 400 students including a group of 50 descendants of the Hakka people for the appointment. Volunteer instructors must participate in an extensive training program the week prior to their work with students in various elementary schools in Taiwan. Hong will be required to develop lesson plans and instructional strategies before she can interact with students.
To be eligible for the program applicants must reside in the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Ireland, South Africa or Belize. Volunteers/instructors must be high school juniors with impeccable academic credentials. Also, a teacher recommendation is required for entry into the program. Students apply for the appointment via the Taipei Economic and Cultural/Representative Offices.
